government investigations
Government agencies have awesome powers, enormous budgets, and no incentive to weigh costs and benefits. When the government places an individual or business in its cross-hairs, the expense and embarrassment could be ruinous, even for the innocent. Responding to congressional inquiries, grand jury subpoenas, or state attorney general probes requires institutional knowledge, mastery of procedure, and credibility with the government. Sweigart Murdock, LLP’s partners have all three, having assisted in the representation of witnesses before the January 6 Select Committee, defended Republican electors facing criminal indictments, responded to federal grand jury subpoena, and served as Counsel to two Congressional committees.
When representing a target or witness, Sweigart Murdock, LLP has three goals: (1) protect the client’s rights; (2) protect the client’s reputation; and (3) protect the client’s pocketbook. These goals are often in tension. Too many witnesses believe they have nothing to hide and are simply ripped apart. Other witnesses drop jaw-dropping sums of money for lawyers to review documents using manual, antiquated methods. At Sweigart Murdock, LLP, we don’t have a template for responding to investigations. Rather, we provide our clients with sophisticated representation tailored to their own circumstances. Our goal is to ensure that the process is not the punishment, no matter what the government intends.
